The Building Overview

At the centerpiece of our effort to transform the way we teach medicine is a new building designed to be one of the most advanced centers for medical education in the nation, allowing us to re-invent the way physicians and medical researchers are educated and trained.

The Li Ka Shing Center for Learning and Knowledge will be the hub of the Stanford School of Medicine. A state-of-the-art center for medical education distinguished by high-tech facilities designed to accommodate breakthroughs in information and imaging technologies, the Li Ka Shing Center for Learning and Knowledge will offer innovative classrooms, a major conference center, and an entire floor of mock hospital environments.

The Li Ka Shing Center for Learning and Knowledge will also include a broad array of resources for medical and graduate students, postdoctoral and clinical fellows, residents, and faculty, as it creates vibrant new connections with Stanford Hospital & Clinics, Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, the main Stanford campus, and the wider community.

Designed by the renowned San Francisco architectural firm NBBJ, the five-story, 120,000-square-foot Learning and Knowledge Center is strikingly modern in its design. The building celebrates the spirit of multidisciplinary learning and research by clearly exhibiting its contemporary features in dramatic open spaces and through the porous nature of the design, while simultaneously offering a variety of settings for quiet study and peaceful contemplation.

Construction is scheduled to begin April 2008, with a targeted completion date of December 2009 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the School's relocation from San Francisco to Palo Alto. The Li Ka Shing Center for Learning and Knowledge is estimated to cost $90.2 million.
