Overall Design Goals
As the new “front door” to the School of Medicine,
the Li Ka Shing Center for Learning and Knowledge will have a powerful architectural presence that unifies
the School of Medicine campus. Incorporating the bold red roof
element of the Clark Center and the arcades of the central campus,
the Li Ka Shing Center for Learning and Knowledge will reflect many of the significant design elements that
distinguish Stanford. While the school’s research buildings
are largely focused inward, the Li Ka Shing Center for Learning and Knowledge is intentionally designed to
look outward, with multiple points of entry and opportunities
for exploration, accommodating a wide range of Stanford constituents
and visitors. Exterior stairs, courtyards, balconies, and large
glass doors enable building occupants
to enjoy the climate and natural light.
The Li Ka Shing Center for Learning and Knowledge sits on a pivotal site in the School of Medicine at the
crossroads of the research enterprise of the School and the clinical
enterprise of the two hospitals. In the future the back door of
the Li Ka Shing Center for Learning and Knowledge (picture above) will become a second front door looking
out across a plaza strip of lawn between the Stanford Hospital
and the Lucille Packard Children's Hospital.
