Receiving and Delivery

A new School of Medicine central loading dock will be situated between MSOB (the future site of SIM3), Governor’s Lane and SIM1 (currently parking lot south of CCSR), and located below grade to connect to a network of tunnels for transportation of equipment, materials and personnel. Between 5000 and 5,500 gross square feet, it will contain eight bays, accommodate the largest 18 wheel tractor trailer and allow for the consolidation of most waste management and recycling functions. A combination of new and existing tunnels will access service elevators in each building. Designed for both materials movement and building occupants, the tunnels will accommodate 1 and 2-way traffic using motorized cart pullers and tugs, allowing for the frequent and efficient movement of both small and large quantities of materials.

Virtually all of the receiving and delivery needs of the School will be provided through the new central loading dock with the exception of the few buildings that are not located on the tunnel network, including MSLS, Lucas, Redwood, PSRL and MSOB. These buildings will be served at grade at MSLS, in front of MSOB or via the loading dock service elevator. Finally, there will be limited receiving and delivery at grade from the Quarry Road extension lots beginning early 2008 to accommodate staging of deliveries where required (e.g. furniture deliveries) and 20-30 minute drop-off deliveries to the east side of the School of Medicine campus.
