Construction Alerts
1. Walkway between Alway and Fairchild
1st Notice
The walkway between the Fairchild entrance and the Stone Complex will be slightly modified to allow for the construction of the final LKSC walkway. The area will remain open through construction. The pathway immediately next to the Alway building will be slightly altered to allow for this work. The overall route will not be changed. Please continue to travel south from the Stone Complex to access Fairchild. The work will start on Monday, September 28, 2009
2. Beckman/LKSC pathway (near the Beckman Café)
1st Notice
The exterior stairs between Beckman and LKSC will have four concrete cores removed. This will allow for additional telecommunication pathways between the buildings. The coring should not introduce significant vibration. It will create localized noise conditions. The work will start and be completed on Friday, September 25, 2009.
3. Campus Drive
1st Notice
On behalf of the University Campus Drive Realignment project: The construction on the north barrel of Campus Drive West is nearly complete, and we are preparing to flip traffic to the new section of road so we can continue work on the new South Barrel and Serra Mall extension. Work will be complete during the week of September 21st, and we will flip traffic on Monday, September 28th at 5am. A traffic flagger will be available through noon to ensure a smooth transition.
4. Arrival of the Palm Trees
1st Notice
The new palm trees that will establish the front entrance of the School of Medicine will arrive start arriving on October 7, 2009. Please expect localized delays on Campus Drive during this time.

1.(2nd Notice) Alumni Lawn and Campus Drive
Near the RAF and the Clark Loading Area. The project will be removing concrete remnants required to finalize the new landscaping plan. Areas of concrete removal (jack hammering) will occur at the new entrance to the SoM campus, next to RAF and the Clark Center. The area under construction will be the future Alumni Green lawn and Campus Drive. Effects of the jack hammering will be felt as far as RAF, Fairchild, and the Clark Center. The work has been postponed until Monday, August 31st to allow for additional notification. The work will be completed between Monday, August 31st and Wednesday, September 2nd. Work will be limited between the hours of 6:30am and 3:30pm.

The area will be the future Alumni Green lawn. Effects of the jack hammering will be felt as far as RAF, Fairchild, and the Clark Center. The work will commence on Wed, August 26, 2009.

Construction Alerts
1. Walkway between Alway and Fairchild (From the Deans Lawn to LKSC)
1st Notice: The walkway in the noted area will be severely impacted starting on June 15, 2009. The construction will start immediately following graduation weekend. The closure is required to connect Li Ka Shing (LKSC) to campus utilities. In addition to connecting LKSC, this work will be improve utility connections for the entire SoM campus.
All attempts will be made to keep a path of travel open throughout construction. Any localized closures will be relayed via e-mail to the building lists and a detour route will be established. All buildings will continue to have at least one access maintained at all times. Please consider alternate paths of travel throughout the construction. Duration of construction will be announced shortly.
2. Walkway between CCSR and SIM1 (South of CCSR)
1st Notice: The walkway in the noted area will be blocked for the construction of Academic Walk starting in late June 2009. The walkway in the CCSR Atrium and the walkway north of CCSR will continue to be open throughout construction. Academic Walk will be open for pedestrians and bikes by the end of the Connective Elements construction in Spring 2010.
3. Steam Shutdown
2nd Notice: The CoGen plant will be making significant changes to the School of Medicine/Hospital steam system. The shutdown will start on June 19th. Campus is installing a steam valve cluster along campus drive that will provide additional flexibility in how steam is delivered through the entire medical center system. In addition, modifications will be made within the Hospital that may affect School of Medicine users. These changes are being completed in the summer, when steam demand is at its lowest point. Please refer to the Engineering and Maintenance (E&M) 30 day notice sheet for specifics, including exact time and dates, duration, and which systems will be affected.

5. RAF Ramp Relocation
Complete! Spring 2009: The ramp connection to Campus drive is now complete. With the opening of the loading dock, the remaining infrastructure changes are being made to the loading dock at the west end to allow for the construction of Discovery Walk.
6. LKSC Building
The focus of work on LKSC has shifted from primarily a structural and exterior project to now focusing on the interior construction. There are still a few exterior spaces that are under construction. The contractors have erected a very large support system to hang all of the panels for the underhanging roof. While the rate of exterior change has diminished, the interior work has ramped up considerably. The project team is focusing on having the interior construction completed and ready for the AV crews to start by late summer, early Fall 2009. Given the technology prowess of the new building, the installation of these systems require a considerable amount of time. The project is on schedule.
7. School of Medicine Sitework
The LKSC site work has shifted into high gear. The project has just completed the re-roofing of the two underground buildings. The final concrete work associated with the new School of Medicine master plan is being put into place. Soon south facing portions of CCSR, Beckman, Fairchild and west facing Clark Center rooms will have a wonderful view of the new School’s front entrance. The construction of the front entrance is on schedule for completion on time. 8.Lokey Stem Cell Building
The Lorry I. Lokey Stem Cell Research Building has started adding the exterior skin panels that will create its final appearance. The building has made substantial interior rough construction progress as well. The basement is 70% framed with the higher floors having a lower percentage. Nearly all of the primary fire separation walls are built throughout the facility. The IT infrastructure for the building is being put into place starting June 2009. The interstitial decking between the first floor and the ground floor is now complete and the mechanical systems are quickly being snapped together. The project is on schedule.
9.Campus Drive Realignment
Modifications at CoGen, including the steam system upgrades and the ongoing construction of the Lorry I. Lokey Stem Cell Research building have halted construction on campus drive work. The overall schedule for the the realignment is still on track for opening at the same time as the Lokey Building by Summer 2010.

School of Medicine Construction Update
February 13, 2009
1. (Repeat Notice) Construction Alert Heavier than normal noise and vibration is expected between tomorrow, February 14 through March 6, 2009. To support the construction of the SoM Front Door (see item 4 below for more details), the sidewalk south of Beckman will be removed starting on February 14. In addition the remaining RAF ramp will be removed as well. Both activities are expected to affect Beckman, CCSR, Fairchild, Clark and especially the RAF buildings. All precautions are being taken to minimize impact to existing buildings. Where disruption is unavoidable, work has been combined to minimize long term noise and vibration exposure.
2. (New) Campus Drive Closure March 7th through the 8th- The project will shutdown Campus drive between Via Ortega and Panama on the weekend of March 7th through the 8th. The purpose of the shutdown is to run several utility crossings across campus drive to serve the new School of Medicine construction projects. We have tried to group several utility runs together over this one weekend to minimize the number of shutdowns required. The proposed hours of the shutdown would be from 6am on Saturday the 7th to 4pm on Sunday the 8th. Additional information will be provided shortly regarding the final detour route.
3. (Updated Information) Loading Dock The loading dock has been completed! The dock is in the final stages of being operationalized this month. The completion of the dock will soon necessitate all deliveries being moved from the CCSR/Beckman/Clark parking area to the new facility. The change will occur by March 2, 2009. All vendors are being notified of the change by the Procurement Department. Banners will be installed throughout the campus to notify vendor drivers of the change. In addition, flyers will be handed out directly to the drivers over the next two weeks. Information is currently available at the OFPM website located here:

4. (Updated Information) SoM Front Door The area previously used as a parking area, construction lay down location and delivery dock will be transformed into the new SoM front door starting on March 2, 2009. The existing area will be removed and replaced. The area directly south of Beckman will be impacted as soon as February 14, 2009. The entrance to the Beckman patio and the Beckman Bistro will remain accessible throughout the project from the east side of the building. The 1st floor Beckman doorway will be accessible only in an emergency. The door will not be accessible for normal traffic. 5. (Updated Information) Fairchild Sidewalk The walkway between Fairchild and Alway/Lane has been reopened. The area south of the Farichild entrance is tentatively scheduled for work in July 2009. Until then, Fairchild will have unimpeded access to the North and South of the building. Additional detail will be available later this Spring

1st Notice: Area: Fairchild Entrance (Between Fairchild and Alway/Lane Entrances)
Duration: Thursday, December 18, 2008 - February (First week), 2009
Impact: The Fairchild Entrance, located directly outside of LKSC will remain open thoughout the project -however the connection between Fairchild and Alway/Lane will be severed for over one month. Those coming from the South (Clark Center Cafe) will still have access to the building. Everyone going from Fairchild to Alway/Lane will need to go south, around Fairchild, past Clark and back to Alway/Lane. This closure is required to make utility connections between LKSC and the campus infrastructure. We are going to complete all the necessary site work at the same time to ensure that multiple closures are not required. The work was scheduled to use as much of the holiday shutdown as possible to avoid inconveniencing Fairchild occupants.
2nd Notice: Area: Beckman Tunnel (Between Beckman and LKSC)
Duration: Friday, December 12, 2008 - Monday, December 14, 2008
Impact: The contractor will be installing the last piece of waterproofing on the tunnel today. The area impacted will be further away from Beckman and represents the remaining 10% application for this product. Previous applications were reported to H&S due to lingering odor issues. H&S has the MSDS sheets on file for all SoM individuals to review, if interested.
2nd Notice: Area: Welch Road Closure (Between Campus Drive and MSOB Driveway)
Duration: Completed by End of January, 2009
Impact: The closure of Welch Road is scheduled to be completed by the end of January.

NOTICES:
- Welch Road between the MSOB parking area and Campus drive will be closed from November 10th through mid-January. The route has received significant signage detailing the detour plan. Only the U-line bus will be allowed through this area between the hours of 3PM-6PM. The area is closed to through traffic at all times.
-the sidewalk east of MSOB will be closed between November 12-14th to connect the new construction trailers. The trailers will be located immediately adjacent to the MSOB building.

I am sorry to have been delayed in distributing this information. As we enter week two of what is normally a three week advanced notice of construction, please find below summary bullet points of the activities that are taking place on the - Connective Elements site work at the Clark Center service and bicycle parking area, the re-alignment of the domestic water line for the Campus Drive Re-alignment project, the re-location of the RAF Loading Dock, the construction of the LKSC and SIM1 buildings and the Central Loading Dock -- from September 29th through October 17th. If you need a more precise date for any specific activity than is provided below please feel free to call me.
NOTICES
- The south door to the Lane Building will be closed all day October 6th and reopened sometime October 7th so that the entrance wall can be repainted where the Beckman Bridge was removed last Christmas. The south entrance to the Alway Building will similarly be closed on Wednesday October 8th and reopened sometime October 9th.
- For the purposes of planning ahead, according to the current schedule, the portion of Welch Rd between the MSOB parking lot and the intersection with Campus Drive will be closed for two months starting the week of October 20th.
- Work will begin to replace the sidewalk between the Beckman building and the new LKSC building in mid-October. The first section to be replaced will be from the east exit of Beckman north to the east/west sidewalk. This section will not be passable during this work. Entrance to the Beckman building will be through the north entrance or by walking around the west side of the building, along the south side and approaching the east entrance from the south. More information will follow about this work - however, note that on October 23rd and 24th please be prepared for significant vibration and noise around the northeast corner of the Beckman building as the sidewalk is jackhammered and removed.
Li Ka Shing Center for Learning and Knowledge
- Pour 2nd floor slab (took place starting 12am, Sept 30th)
- Install waterproofing at the perimeter beam
- Finish fireproofing in the basement
- Set the grease trap and finish the backfill on the West side of the building
- Begin installation of the underground utilities on the North and East sides of the building
- Finish the metal deck installation on the 4th floor
- Install the priority walls on the 1st floor
- Install fireproofing on the 1st floor
- Continue installation of stairs #1 and 2
- Erect the roof on the South side of the building
- Install 3rd floor inserts and rebar

- Install the fire sprinklers in the basement

SIM-1
- At Grid Line 1 through 4 (North End of Building), placement of base rock for slab on grade, installing rebar and place slab on grade concrete by October 16th.
- Ground anchors are currently being pull tested.
- The third section (3 of 3) of footing rebar and setting of bolt templates for columns along Grid Lines 8 through 10 are in progress scheduled to be complete end of the week of October 13th.
- Forming, waterproofing, installing rebar and shotcrete of walls is in progress through the week of October 3rd.
- Layout, excavate and install underground utilities (plumbing and electrical) has started and is scheduled to be complete by the end of the week of October 6th.
Campus Drive Realignment Projejct
Through October 17th, work will continue on the re-location of the domestic water line.
Loading/Receiving Dock
- The loading dock lid has been backfilled, and the new WT trailer compound will be placed in this area in the coming months.
- Installation of the canopy pop-out began the week of 9/29.
- Flooring was installed the week of 9/29.
- The elevator penthouse has been framed will receive a stucco finish in the next two weeks.
- The bathrooms will be completed the week of 10/6.
- All door hardware was installed and made functional the week of 9/29.
- Landscaping along the north and west sides of the loading dock will be placed during the week of 10/6.
- GreenScreen Fence will be installed the week of 10/6.
RAF Ramp Relocation
- Waterproofing for the Existing RAF II has started.
The new pavement in the RAF ramp will be placed in two lifts and should be completed by the writing of this notice.
- Cabling for the RAF Ramp security cameras and entry gate equipment is scheduled to complete the week of 10/6.
- The existing RAF II wall in the new ramp will receive a stucco finish during the week of 10/6.
Phase 1B Utilities
- No construction activities are scheduled currently.
- The last steps of bureaucratic paperwork are being completed so that work can proceed on the relocation of the Fairchild generator.
