Starting to clean-up and replace landscape taken up during construction

Weeks of 8/13-8/24

It has been a while since I have sent a construction progress note. I hope that everyone has had some kind of vacation this summer.

Whiting Turner has not however, and has made great progress on the Utilities Phase 0 and 1A project. As you have probably noticed virtually all of the work between PSRL and the Redwood building and in the MSOB courtyard is now complete and the landscape replaced. This week and next Whiting Turner's team will:

begin landscaping work between MSOB and the modular buildings. Additionally, the plantings in this area will be replaced along with the decomposed granite walkway.
continue installation of the new high voltage electrical duct bank in Campus Drive. Switchover from the existing electrical wiring to the new wiring will also begin and demolition of the existing electrical duct bank is scheduled to begin 9/4/07.
continue excavating for the new chilled water piping and steam tunnel in Campus Drive. Additionally, installation of the piping materials will begin.
begin the installation of the new storm drain piping to the future loading dock.
complete the new fire and domestic water stubs to the loading dock.
In addition, Stanford communications will continue installing new phone and data lines throughout the new communications duct banks.

Finally, there is a significant shutdown of the chilled water system serving CCSR on Thursday night, August 23rd between 7pm and 7am (Friday). There will be no cooling for the CCSR building Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning systems or any other equipment cooled by chilled water during the shutdown.

Looking Ahead
Fairchild Auditorium will close on September 30, 2007. We will clean out the auditorium and abate the asbestos (integrated into the building materials of that time) during the month of October and plan to begin demolition in November. I will keep you updated as the time approaches.
Assuming we get all of our approvals, we will begin construction of the new tunnel leg in front of CCSR and over to the new loading dock site during mid-October. Excavation for the new loading dock (located in the parking south of PSRL will follow by January, 2008.
With the demolition of the Fairchild Auditorium and the beginning of the tunnel construction there will also be additional modifications to the south (L15-L16) parking lot. We are re-designing the Quarry Road Extension parking lot east of the Alway building to accommodate some of the parking that will be displaced and Parking and Transportation will continue to regularly monitor the surrounding "A" and "C" permit parking opportunities to ensure that there remains adequate available parking. There will be more information on the modifications issued by Parking and Transportation as we get closer.
Thanks for all of your patience!

Maggie
