Beckman Bridge Demolition -- December 22nd-December 29th

With the demolition of the Beckman Bridge over the Christmas Holiday, the demolition project is mostly complete. The Lane and Alway buildings will be repaired where the bridges were removed on Thursday and Friday, 1/17 and 1/18/2008. This will require closing and boarding up of the south double doors into the Lane and Alway buildings for one day at each building.
The new west stair down to the RAF is the next big milestone for the Li Ka Shing Center project. Whiting-Turner has completed the demolition of the old stair and much of the excavation. Construction of the new stair is underway pending weather. The new stair will eventually be connected to the Li Ka Shing Center.
The City of Palo Alto will complete the replacement of their water line during this same two week period.
Advanced Notice of Work Ahead for the New Stair Project during the weeks of 1/14-1/21:
- Excavation for footings at the stair will begin on Monday the 14th.
- The underground plumbing drain will be also be installed week of the 14th.
- Installation of the rebar for the footings will begin the middle of next week and will finish up on Friday or Monday of the following week.
- The concrete for the footings will be poured on Monday the 21st or Tuesday the 22nd.
- We will being setting the primary wall forms on Tuesday the 22nd.
Installation of the rebar for the primary walls will follow the formwork beginning on Thursday and should finish up on Friday.
- Installation of the stair lighting electrical conduit will begin on Friday the 25th and will continue the following week
The following work will be ongoing the weeks of 1/14 and 1/21 for the Loading Dock & Tunnel Project.
Tunnel
• The last of the wood lagging/shoring for the final lift up to the Utility Crossing at Governor’s Avenue is to be complete by January 11, 2008.
• Installation of drainage board and below grade collection pipe for tunnel walls is being installed and scheduled to be complete by January 9, 2008.
• Demolition of the existing tunnel for the new tunnel entrance has begun and scheduled to be complete on January 11, 2008.
• Beginning on January 11, 2008, the rebar for the tunnel floor slab is to be placed and this work will continue up to January 24, 2008.
• Meanwhile, once the rebar for the tunnel floor slab is far enough along, sections of the slab will be poured on January 16, 2008, then again on January 22, 2008.
Loading Dock
• Installation of ALL Permanent Soldier Piles is complete. You can now see the outline of the Loading Dock.
• Excavation has begun in the Receiving Dock area. The first 5’ of the receiving dock is being excavated and scheduled to complete on January 11, 2008.
• Following the excavation of the first 5’ in the Receiving Dock, shotcrete is scheduled to begin on January 11, 2008 and work through the week of January 18, 2008.
• Once the first 5’ of shotcrete is far enough along, Top Grade will begin excavating the second 5’ of the Receiving Dock on January 16, 2008.
• Again, once excavation is far enough along, Malcolm Drilling will start installing tiebacks (a device used in construction the retaining walls of the dock to hold the wall in place) during the week of December 21, 2008.

After seven days of breaking concrete and chipping it away from the building the bridge
that formerly connected the Beckman building to the Fairchild Auditorium building has
been completely removed.

The bridge connecting the Beckman building to the Lane/Edwards buildings at the north
stair has also been completely removed.
