Excavation has begun for the Li Ka Shing Center building! For the people in Beckman, Fairchild Science, Lane and Edwards this means 45 trucks a day completing three loops (trips) a day. If you have watched any of the process, you would have seen the precautions that have been put in place to avoid spreading any contamination off the site. The dirt is also taken to a special dump site in Salinas. As you recall from the Loading Dock project, excavation is completed in five feet increments or lifts. According to our data, it is likely that any contaminants are in the first or second lift, so if you see a change in the process it is because we have passed any contamination. Additionally since installing the perimeter air monitoring stations, we have had negative test results each day.
Please find below advanced notice of the upcoming construction work for not only the Li Ka Shing Center, but the Loading Dock and Tunnel, the Utilities 1B phase, and the completion of the new Stair.
Utilities Phase 1B
The primary goal of the upcoming utilities work is to complete any remaining work for the LKC and to continue to make progress on the work that is required to move primarily the Beckman generator.
- Finish installing the conduits between vaults E3NC (CCSR) and E2K4 (Campus Dr.).
- Install the conduits between E2K4 and the new Beckman generator pads.
- Form and install the rebar so that the Beckman generator and transformer pads can be poured.
- Facilitate the switchover of the gas line when PG&E schedules their crew to come out and do the work.
Phase 1 Stair
- Finish the drywall in stair.
- Install frames, hardware and doors in the stair.
- Paint the stair wall.
- Install waterproofing on the new tunnel roof and tie into existing waterproofing.
- Replace the dirt back over the waterproofing and pour the sidewalk to the new stair landing.
- Permanent light fixtures have been backordered. We will install them when they arrive.
- The new stair should open by the end of next week. Once open pedestrians will use the new west stair to access the RAF and tunnels. The east stair will be demolished.
Demolition Project:
- Fix and complete the stucco repair on the Beckman building.
- Finish the interior repairs to Lane and Alway.
Li Ka Shing Center
As described above, we have started the excavation of the 1st five feet of dirt.
- Install the first five feet of lagging for the shoring system. Putting in the shoring system will look similar to the process that was used at the Loading Dock.
- We will begin excavation of the 2nd lift once our consultants have completed the soil tests to determine if there are still any contaminants.
Tunnel
- The top-slab of the tunnel is complete.
- The top-slab is in the process of curing before any bracing can be removed. After 20 days, waterproofing and backfill of the dirt over the tunnel will begin.
Receiving Dock
- The underground electrical and plumbing installations were completed the week of March 31st
- Waterproofing of the Receiving Dock walls is complete and the rebar for the walls is now getting set up.
- The shotcrete of the walls is began the week of March 31st. The waterproofing will be inspected and approved prior to the spraying of the shotcrete.
- The forming of the columns should be completed and the concrete poured the week of April 7th.
Loading Dock
- Malcolm Drilling has completed the permanent shoring system.
- Waterproofing of the Loading Dock Walls started and will continue for a week or two.
- Following the waterproofing, NIBBI Concrete is setting up the rebar for the perimeter footings and the walls.
If you have not looked over the fence at the Loading Dock, you are missing one of the biggest holes that I have ever seen. It is really worth taking a look if you want to understand what it takes to build a loading dock that might otherwise seem simple.
Please let me know if you have any questions about the upcoming work or anything else.
