Thank you to everyone in the Fairchild Science building and the RAF for making it through the demolition of the East RAF Stair that was completed this week. This was noisy, high vibration work - and we really appreciated everyone hanging in and giving us a chance to just power through the task!
On Friday, April 25th, the education building officially received its new name as a result of a wonderful gift from the Li Ka Shing Foundation. Henceforth, the building will no longer be referred to as the LKC or the Learning and Knowledge Center. It will be referred to as the Li Ka Shing Center for Learning and Knowledge, or abbreviated to the Li Ka Shing Center. We are extremely appreciative of this gift that enabled us to build the Li Ka Shing Center.
The following work has either just been completed or will be completed during the week of May 5th for the Loading Dock & Tunnel, the Utilities 1B, the Phase I Stair, and the Li Ka Shing Center for Learning and Knowledge Projects. With the next installment of the construction newsletter we will begin to track the RAF Ramp Re-location project which is also just getting underway. More on this one next time.
Tunnel
The top-slab is cured. The bracing will be removed around the middle of May.
Waterproofing the tunnel lid is nearly complete and the tunnel is scheduled to be backfilled the week of May 19th.
Receiving Dock
Forming and installing of rebar for the emergency stairs is in progress. The shotcrete of the upper portion of the stair walls was completed.
The stair’s mid-landing will be formed and placed after the shotcrete of the upper stair walls.
The work required for the installation of the stair risers began April 28th and will be completed May 9, 2008.
The fine grading and placement of the rebar was completed and the slab poured on May 1st.

Loading Dock
Waterproofing the Loading Dock Walls was completed April 25, 2008.
Placing rebar for the loading dock walls has started and will continue through the week of May 5th. Meanwhile, shotcrete of walls is scheduled began April 25th and will continue through May 9th
Phase 1 Stair
The new west RAF stair opened on Monday.
The punchlist items have been completed.
We are still waiting on the pricing for the door hardware changes before we can proceed. These do not effect the functionality of the stair doors.
Phase 1B Utilities
The rigid conduit was installed from vault 3NC to E3NC. The conduit still needs to be installed inside of the tunnel. This should be complete by Wednesday, 5/7.
Test Beckman generator. The temporary generator was taken offline and the Beckman generator put back online on April 29th. This concludes the Beckman generator relocation work.
Installation of the electrical conduits is complete. We still need to find and connect to the existing line as the location is different than shown on the plans.
The footings for the Clark generator have been excavated.
The rebar for the Clark generator footings and pad have been installed.
The concrete for the footings and pad for the Clark Generator was poured May 2.
The temporary generator has been moved into place and set up.
Bring the temporary generator online sometime towards the end of the week of May 5th (4 hour emergency power shutdown)
The Clark Generator will be prepared for hazmat inspection and inspected sometime the end of the week of May 5th.
New pullboxes will be ordered.
Relocate Clark generator to the new pad.
WT hopes to cut back over from the temporary generator to the Clark generator sometime the week of 5/26. The difficulties locating and additional work required to connect to the existing electrical line has caused this date to slip a bit.
Li Ka Shing Center
Excavate perimeter footings -- the mass excavation is 80% complete.
The East RAF stair was demolished starting on Tuesday. The work should be completed today. Again thank you for everyone's cooperation with this step.
Begin waterproofing of the North and East walls and footing elevations.
Excavate the north 2/3 of the footings and sump pits and start installing rebar.
Start the installation of the main electrical distribution conduits.
You probably have also notice some changes along the construction fencing. We have almost completed the installation of the new black chain link fencing, the new project signage and the black netting. As promised early on in the project, we will not block the view of the construction at the site of the Li Ka Shing Center or as much as possible along the northern perimeter of the SIM1 or Loading Dock and Tunnel sites.
