I am sorry to send such a belated update to the two weeks of construction, July 21st through August 1st. Some of this work you will have seen take place this week. I am only including the two largest projects in this update but will catch everyone up on the works when I get back from vacation. I will also try to get some new pictures up during August. Hope all is going well for you!
LKSC
As you probably noticed the slab was poured on July 14th - this is a big milestone which has enabled us to move forward to an even bigger milestone - the erection of the steel.
Additionally, the webcam is fun to watch right now because the building is changing visibly daily. Just go to http://lksc.stanford.edu/ and click on the two webcam bullets to enlarge the image and/or control it.
- Install rebar to mechanical room walls
- Spray the shotcrete mechancial room walls
- Prep and place rebar for mechanical room slab on grade (this is the only large piece of the slab left to pour - over by the northwest corner of Beckman)
- Pour mechanical room slab on grade
- Begin forming mechanical room roof - the mechanical room is a one story underground structure attached to the building but the area does not carry up through the other floors.
- Install rebar to the new LKSC tunnel roof
- Pour the new LKSC tunnel roof
- Install waterproofing on tunnel roof
- Begin steel erection at 1st floor
- Begin 2nd floor steel erection
SIM1
Right now it is all about digging a really big hole, getting rid of lots! of dirt and shoring up the remaining dirt.
July 21th - 25th
- Excavate to 15' below grade and continue to install temporary shoring
July 28th - August 1st
- Excavate to 20' below grade and continue to install temporary shoring
- Install Sacrificial Ground Anchors
The following is the two week look ahead for the period from July 7th through July 18th for the LKSC, Loading Dock and Tunnel, Phase 1B Utilities, RAF Ramp Relocation, Campus Drive Realignment and SIM1 projects. We are making great progress on all fronts and really appreciate your continued patience with the construction work all around you.
LKSC
We will pass two major milestones in the construction of the LKSC during the month of July. On July 14th we will pour the slab on grade and then on July 21st steel erection will begin.
- Install the aggregate base (AB) for the slab on grade (SOG) pour
- Finish installing the floor boxes in the basement
- Prepare for the SOG pour
- Install the SOG rebar
- Form and install the rebar for the tunnel walls
- Pour the SOG on Monday, 7/14 starting at approximately 1AM. This is the major concrete pour that will last well into the next day.
- Shotcrete the tunnel walls
- Form and install the rebar for the mechanical room walls
- Shotcrete mechanical room walls
- The steel joists arrive on 7/15 and place the joists in the hole
Begin assembling the joists and prepare to begin the steel erection on July 21st.
Phase 1B Utilities
All construction activities are complete with the exception of the Fairchild generator work. No work can begin on the Fairchild Generator until we have our kick-off meeting with the OSHPD IOR on Thursday, 7/10.
Tunnel
Punch list work and final clean-up in the new stretch of tunnel south of CCSR is complete such that the MEP rough-in can now begin
Loading/Receiving Dock
The Loading Dock is starting to look like a loading dock inside -- it is exciting!
Waterproofing of the concrete lid is scheduled to begin July 8th and be complete by August 1st. The Whiting-Turner jobsite trailers are scheduled to be re-located from where they currently sit to this concrete lid area. The trailers will remain on the concrete lid until the SIM1 building is complete.
- Structural steel for the canopy is currently being erected. Work will continue through the week of July 14
- Interior block walls are in the process of being laid.
- The steel for the elevator tower is complete and being framed out
RAF Ramp Relocation
- The footings for the ramp walls are in place
the wall rebar is starting to go up and will be completed by July 15
- July 16, Conco will be ready to shotcrete the walls.
- Electrical rough-in for the lighting, cameras and gate are in progress.
Campus Drive Realignment Project
This is a new project that will formally begin in 3-4 more weeks. The two desired outcomes of realigning a portion of the north barrel of Campus Drive south are to enable us to slightly lengthen the new ramp to the RAF Loading Dock (thereby enabling us to reduce the slope slightly) and to increase the overall footprint of SIM1 while still maintaining the required setback to Campus Drive. Our goal is to relocate any trees that we need, and are able, to by July 30th
Our plan is to relocate the fence, demolish the old bike path and build the new path such that demolition and rough grading of the road itself can begin in August. We hope to receive our OSHPD permit soon such that in September the team can start work on the utilities.
SIM1
Take a look at the size of this site !!
- We will be excavating the first lift (5') of soil from the site this week.
- We will start the process again of drilling for soldier piles during the week of 7/14
- Excavation of the second lift (10') of soil will take place the week of 7/14.
Hope that everyone is having a terrific summer. More news is soon to come. Recall that there are lots of people that will be happy to answer your questions. From the School of Medicine you can contact me at this e-mail address or by calling me at 650-996-5683 or 650-498-4276, or if your question is particularly related to SIM1 you can call Chris Shay at 650-724-8898. Particularly if your question is related to the construction itself you are welcome to contact our DPM partners -- Paul Forti and Laura Goldstein for the LKSC and Connective Elements Projects and BJ Sewak for the SIM1 project.
